Wedding Florists How to Catch a Good One!....You’ve found the perfect partner - now you need the perfect florist - Caroline Marshall - Foster who heads up Master Florist, a network of the very best florists in the UK explains how to choose the florist of your dreams.
The right flowers can make or break your wedding and we don’t just mean financially. If they’re right they’ll set the theme and feeling as well as highlighting you the main character. If they are wrong you’ll never forget it because they’ll appear in every single picture. Which is why finding the right florist is just as important as finding the right dress, photographer and venue. What makes a good florist?Someone who is sympathetic to your needs but creative enough to inspire you with different ideas so that your wedding really is personal. Flexible enough to work within your budget but honest enough to say if it’s not enough and why. Reliable and trustworthy so that you know the flowers will turn up at the right time and won’t fall apart or die before you’ve said "I do". 1. Shop aroundYou probably aren’t marrying the first person you kissed, so don’t choose the first florist you visit.
Don’t be swayed by qualifications. They may indicate expertise but there are florists who took exams years ago and then haven’t done anything to update their knowledge while others, who have no bits of paper, are out there checking out the latest design ideas and trends. Ask for information and brochures to give you a taster of their style and prices. The final bill can never be cast in stone but you will get an indication of their professionalism and charges. DIY Florals? If you have a relative or friend that wants to do the flowers that’s great but be careful. You wouldn’t buy a dress that wasn’t properly made so don’t take a risk with your flowers either. There is nothing worse than a bouquet falling apart as you walk up the aisle so unless they are really experienced this is a job best left to the professionals. If you can’t dissuade them try and enrol the florist to help by supplying the flowers for, say, the table decorations so that the theme is constant and the flowers are all of the same quality. 2. Book your slotOnce you’ve found the florist you like, book them. A reputable florist is unlikely to take more than 2 or 3 weddings a day in order to give best attention so good ones get booked up months in advance. Expect to spend around an hour on the first consultation which will usually be charged for but taken off the bill when you confirm the order. If the florist tries to rush you or makes you stand in a corner or at the counter move on. This is a big day and you deserve time. Equally don’t expect too much from your florist - two meetings are the norm plus a final sign off a couple of days before the wedding. If you need more expect to pay in the region of £50 per hour for additional consultation time. If you would like samples made up most florists will be happy to help but expect to pay for them.
