Help with My DIY Bouquet

Q

I'm getting married next march and I've decided to make my own bouquet, I' m having red roses, hand tied bouquet, I know roughly how to arrange it but not sure what keeps it together, is it wire or tape, what do you suggest?

A

Parafilm tape is the most effective way to bind a hand tied bouquet. The tape adheres to itself, you just need to stretch the tape once it's been warmed in your hand. You should be able to buy some tape from your local florist or hobby supplies shop.

Once you've covered the stems with parafilm you can stick double sided tape to the parafilm and then cover with ribbon.  Small word of warning, floristry is murder on your nails - don't do your bouquet after you've had a manicure!

A hand tied bouquet is a simple and yet stunning arrangement, which shows the flowers off in their natural beauty. If you are wanting to make your own handtied bouquet then my advice would be to firstly work out the roses you want to use. I recommend passion roses as they have a wonderful strong head and a deep red colouring.

To make a bouquet that is of a reasonable size you will need around 24 large headed roses. Start work from the centre of the bouquet so hold 3 roses in your hand and spiral the bouquet around adding roses as you go. Keep your hand tightly up by the head of the roses. I always tape my handtied bouquets. This is a first stage and will hold the roses are you can see them in your hand.

Use something like pot tape means that the flowers are held well and can go back into water. This is my other recommendation. For a rose handtied make it the night before and leave in a cool place overnight in water. In the morning dry the stems off and wind the ribbon around the stems. If you are using a satin ribbon then you can leave the tape in place as this will be hidden by the binding, if you are using a organza ribbon you need to take this off as you wind up the stems.

I personally would wire all the components first, using tape to hold it all together. Wire all the leaves and flowers and then when you are happy with the shape, wire it all together and then tape the stems.
