Flowers for a Christmas Wedding

Q

I am due to get married at Christmas, after only getting engaged this month so I have a lot to do. Could you help me as I don't really know what flowers are available at that time of year or colours.

A

The first thing I would mention  regarding wedding flowers that close to Christmas would be that you might find many florists may actually be closed, or have limited supplies from their wholesalers. Lots of florists shut between Christmas and New Year so you might have better luck with a freelance florist.

Unfortunately this also means flower prices are higher at this time of year.  Another thing to keep in mind regarding your colour scheme is that red and white flowers tend to be a lot  more expensive around Christmas.

Seasonal flowers at the end of December include Amaryllis, Tulips, Anemones, Waxflower, Orchids, Hellebores, Ranunculus and Narcissus.

Flowers that are  available all year round include Roses, Freesia, Gerbera, Anthurium, Calla lily and Chrysanthemums.

Well firstly congratulations on your engagement. As you are aware there is a lot to do, but the good news is that many florists don’t get booked as quickly as normal in the winter months. That said you are getting married at one of the more busy times of the year. Christmas and the new year see a lot more of the red and white flowers available. This includes Roses, Lilies and the more usual flowers but also the influx of things like Amaryllis, Tulips and Hellebores.

You can also get Hyacinths and Muscari if you wanted to create a more blue colour scheme. There is a lot on offer and virtually any colour scheme can be accommodated. Be warned though, this is one of the most expensive times of the year for flowers at wholesale prices, as demand is high throughout the world.
