Real Dream Weddings... Ian and Bridget at Wicksteed Park

Ian and Bridget wanted to have a wedding that had a traditional theme with a modern twist . Their relaxed attitude was mirrored in their glorious day held at Wicksteed Park Northamptonshire where they had a Civil Ceremony and Reception.

Ian and Bridget met on the internet where they realised they had met some years before at a friend’s party without even knowing! Their first date was Boxing Day 2004, a month or so after meeting online. Ian's proposal was very romantic, he prepared a candlelit 3 course dinner in their home. Afterwards, he surprised Bridget with an extra special course, a covered dish revealed Bridget's surprise, a beautiful sapphire & diamond engagement ring! With Ian on one knee at her side, he uttered the immortal words “will you marry me”! Through tears of joy Bridget said yes "I didn’t need to think about it – I’ve always known Ian was the one for me". Bridget knew exactly the wedding style she wanted, a mixture of traditional with a modern twist. She chose a wedding colour scheme of Ivory, Lilac & Purple. Ian and Bridget, with the help of Bridget's Mum planned the wedding together. Ian and Bridget chose to have a civil ceremony and discovered the St. George’s Suite at Wicksteed Park was ideally suited for them and their guests. It's a stunning location set in 147 acres of parkland. Bridget's two-piece ivory chiffon dress was designed by Amanda Wyatt. An A-line skirt, fitted bodice and matching bolero was set off by a simple veil, plain with a scalloped edge and decorated with crystals matched with ivory satin shoes. Ian and Bridget's three bridesmaids and wore long ivory satin dresses with an ivory ribbon sash tied to one side at the waist matched with ivory shoes. The eldest bridesmaid’s dress was strapless with clear crystals along the top of the bodice. All the dresses were made by a local dressmaker. Bridget's wanted simple but stunning accessories to complement her dress to get the perfect look she commissioned them with a designer she discovered at a Wedding Fair. Jenny handmade Bridget's tiara of clear and lilac Swarovski crystals, matching necklace, earrings and bracelet. She also made the bridesmaids tiaras of clear and lilac crystals and Bridget's mum’s jewellery. "She did a fantastic job and I highly recommend her". Ian, his best man and Bridget's father all hired their wedding suits from Warwick’s Menswear in Kettering. They wore dark grey suits with white shirts, lilac cravats with silver-grey and lilac waistcoats.
Ian and Bridget chose a traditional three tier round stacked cake made by a cake designer that Bridget met at a wedding fair. The bottom tier was traditional fruit, the second tier was chocolate and the top tier was Victoria sponge. Iced with ivory icing, decorated with ivory hearts and trimmed with lilac ribbon. The wedding cake topper was ivory, lilac and purple hearts floating amid ivory and purple feathers. Ian and Bridget's colour scheme created a stunning effect at their wedding and reception. Bridget found some lovely lilac and purple cut out hearts on ebay and used on them on the Invitations and Order of Service, Bridget designed and made all the stationery herself. For the wedding service they hired two bay trees, decorated them with ribbon and lit them with fairy lights placing one at either side where they took their vows. Ribbons decorated every aisle chair and the look was made complete with candles and flowers. The reception decorations were simply but effective with many items found online by Bridget. Bridget created her own seating plan for the guests to use and incorporated their love of red wine by naming the tables after red wine grapes such as Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet! Bridget's talents continued to shine by making all of the wedding favours. Almonds in lilac and ivory nets with matching ribbon and flowers for the ladies. Lilac satin top hats filled with chocolate footballs for the men. Instead of place name cards Bridget created menu cards with each guests name as a keepsake. Purple feathers in each wine glass with silver and purple table confetti scattered over the tables completed their special room. Bridget wanted a natural, understated look on her wedding day feeling that looking like herself was most important. Bridget had several beauty treatments in the run up to the wedding so her skin was in tip top condition for her big day. Bridget had her makeup done on her wedding day which she found very relaxing and one less thing to think about! Bridget's hairdressers styled her hair simply, having added lighter tones the week before. On the day, Bridget's shoulder length hair was softly styled which flicked up at the ends by her hairdresser who came to the house where her bridesmaids and mums hair was styled too.
Bridget's wedding flowers were inspired by memories of her Grandfathers garden. "My favourite flower has always been the rose, my granddad loved his garden and he had rows of beautiful scented roses which is why I’ve always loved them, they are such an elegant flower and I wanted them to feature in my wedding flowers". A local florist with many years experience didn’t disappoint, Bridget had a shower bouquet of ivory roses, lilac and purple freesias with ivy and myrtle. The bridesmaids each had hand tied posies of the same flowers. The button holes were simple ivory roses with a hint of lilac. After the reception the guests took a ride on the Wicksteed Park Steam Train which took them all around the park as part of their wedding package! Ian and Bridget took some quiet time together between the wedding and the reception to reflect on their day so far, walking around the park and having photographs taken by friends was a relaxing moment in their day. The Civil Ceremony was held in the St. George’s Suite with 50 or so of close family and friends. Bridget walked in with her dad to “You Raise Me Up” by Westlife. Ian and Bridget's wedding was made very individual by their choice of modern music and personal songs “Come Into My Life” by Kylie, “I Believe I’m Gonna Love You” by Joe Longthorne, “We’ve Only Just begun” by The Carpenters. Ian was nervous and admitted he had a lump in his throat as Bridget walked in! While the guests were waiting for the ceremony to begin and during the wedding breakfast they played music by Enya. For the evening reception they chose a disco by a local DJ.
After the ceremony the wedding party went into the grounds of the park for their wedding photographs to be taken. Bridget and Ian were thrilled with their photographs and were impressed by Rachel's friendly and efficient approach "Rachel took some beautiful photographs and we would highly recommend her to anyone". In the evening the DJ took photographs which were then posted on his website from where they could then be ordered. Ian and Bridget both agree that taking their vows was the most special part of their wedding day along with the time they spent walking together in the gardens of Wicksteed Park before the evening reception. Bridget's shared her tips to create a gorgeous wedding and keep to a budget. " There are so many fantastic suppliers out there, I attended a variety of Wedding Fairs, which are great as you can chat directly with the supplier and tell them exactly what you’re looking for, plus you see their work and what they can offer. If you have the time to make your own things then I would really recommend doing so, you can save a lot of money by doing this – ebay is a great pace to buy things cheaply without losing out on quality. I made all my own favours and stationery including my table seating plan and I bought most of the materials at ebay. Shop around and you’ll be amazed how much you can save." Bridget found a lot of her ideas by researching in magazines, on wedding websites and at wedding fares". Bridget's top tip? "The most important thing is to enjoy your day; we spend so much time planning it, just relax and take it all in!"
